Are You Buying Every Sunscreen on the Shelf?
Confusion should not be your SPF strategy. What the iron oxides on the back of the bottle actually do.

People come to the counter with three sunscreens in a bag and no idea which one to keep. Not because they did not do their homework. Because the homework was written badly.
The thing nobody puts on the front of the bottle
If you have melasma or any kind of stubborn pigmentation, SPF is only telling you about UVB. What is actually setting your pigment off is a broader range of light, including visible light, and the ingredient that blocks it is iron oxide.
Iron oxides show up in an ingredient list as CI 77491, CI 77492, and CI 77499. Red, yellow, and black. That is the whole secret, and it is printed in six-point type on the back.
Why tinted is not the same as protective
Here is the trap. Tinted sunscreen is marketed as if the tint is the protection. It is not. Plenty of tinted formulas get their color from something other than iron oxides and will do nothing for visible light. Meanwhile some untinted formulas contain them.
Do not read the front. Turn the bottle over and look for the CI numbers.
What to actually do
- Pigmentation is your issue — find iron oxides. Non-negotiable.
- No pigmentation concerns — any broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher you will actually reapply.
- The one that matters most is the one you will wear every day. A perfect formula in a drawer protects nothing.
Stop buying more. Buy the right one and finish the bottle.
